The problem of acne in human skin is common. It is because propionibacteria grow in the sebum accumulated on the sebaceous unit, forming an inflamentary disorder of skin. The propionibacteria- inactivation substances may be used for the treatment of acne. During the investigation of such antimicrobial substances, the determination of viable counts of propionibacteria is important. However, propionibacteria grow very poor on commercially synthetic agar media. Therefor, the development of an agar medium for the well proliferation of propionibacteria is significant. In the present study, Propionibacterium sp. was cultured in three agar media including clostriadial medium, lactobacilli MRS broth and freshly prepared meat extract medium(meat extract plus half concentration of LB broth)in an anaerobic jar at 35aC for 14 days. The growth of propionibacteria cells on each agar plate was evaluated. It was found the freshly prepared meat extract medium was the best medium for cultivation of Propionibacterium sp.
