The Relationship between Human Capital Stock and Economic Growth

This study investigates the relationship between human capital stock and economic growth by drawing comparisons of data released by international organizations. The approach this study adopts is the secondary data analysis of content analysis. The subjects of this study are fifty-three countries that have complete and reliable statistics disclosed in the three international publications as follows: The World Development Indicators by World Bank, Global Competitiveness Report by World Economic Forum, and World Competitiveness Yearbook by Institute of Management and Development. First, the subjects are classified by cluster analysis according to the stock of human capital. Discriminant analysis is applied to test the accuracy of cluster analysis, and one-way ANOVA is applied to test the validity of the classification. For the indicators established in this study, it is principal analysis that is practiced. Next, LISREL 8.51 is used to examine the relationship between human capital stock and economic growth. Finally, multiple regression analysis is adopted to investigate their linear correlation. The following five results are achieved. 1. Based on the fifteen measure indicators, Taiwan ranks 22 and is accordingly classified into the category of developing countries with well-educated and well-trained labor force. 2. The dimensions of human capital stock and economic growth exist positive relationships. 3. Human capital stock in this study explains economic growth at 79.3% variance. 4. Labor migration serves as the most significant factor that promotes economic growth. Based on the major findings, the study provides suggestion for reference of policy-making and further research.
