The Working Conditions of Dubbers in Taiwan Described in Terms of the Market, Technology and Celebrity as Dubbers

Popis: | 95 Dubbing is part of the post-production process, and belongs to the creative cultural industry. However, since the importance of the profession has not been widely recognized, the status of dubbers in Taiwan cannot be compared to that of their Japanese counterparts, who are often treated as celebrities themselves. Moreover, TV stations and film companies are market-oriented. As a result, the structural change of the industry has in turn caused a shift in that particular job market. The present research attempted to address the following questions from three perspectives: the market, celebrity working as dubbers, and digital technology. The first question is how did the change in the industry affect the job market? And how can celebrities who work as dubbers change the nature of the industry? Lastly, how can digital technology alter the dubbing process? The present research has found that due to the market-oriented approach of TV stations and film companies, the labor market has changed quite dramatically along with the media industry. The intense competition, and the additional demands, has lowered the job requirements, and in turn changed the number of opportunities and the desired qualifications. The present research will describe the working conditions of dubbers from the following perspectives: the dramatic change of opportunities, the sharp reduction of work hours, the insignificant fluctuations of wage, the modification of job demands, the inability to enforce contracts, the development of client-agent relationships, the inconsistency of benefits and rights, and the weak strength of the union. Secondly, the use of celebrities as dubbers has become a global trend in marketing, and it is commonly believed it can increase sales. Professional dubbers have expressed displeasure over the unfairness of pay compared to the celebrities. However, since most considered it a marketing gimmick, and it does not occur often enough, professional dubbers commonly believed the use of celebrities does not limit their opportunities. Other than the increase of job opportunities, the employment of celebrities can also attract the attention of potential viewers. Professional dubbers should make use of the chance to hone their craft and solidify their own reputation. Digital technology has brought great convenience to the dubbing industry. However, even though the new technology can save a lot of time and increase efficiency, it does not in fact improve the quality of the dubbing. Since dubbing no longer requires as much precision, there are more and more separated recording processes. As a result, the quality control by the dubbing coordinator has become more important. In a way, digital technology has hindered the dubber’s motivation to fulfill their potential and self-improve. Professional dubbers should make use of the technology while making sure to practice their professional ethics. |
