The Lived Experience of Pregnant Women with Abnormal Fetus who received termination during the Second Trimester

Popis: | 95 Today’s medical technology is more advanced than ever; it has greatly reduced the death of pregnant women and new born babies. However, death, miscarriage, abnormality in fetus’s chromosomes and death of new born still happen constantly; these cause women feeling empty and sorrow. Therefore, the goal of this study is to research women’s living experience after the termination of second trimester pregnancy. This study uses Field method, a qualitative study design. The setting is in a medical center in Taipei and the subjects of study are women who have terminated second trimester pregnancy. The sampling method is purposive sampling. The researcher provided nursing care to the mothers and collected data by using participant observation and interview from the time of checking into hospital, waiting for delivery, delivering, post-delivering to the one-month home recovery period. Each subject is interviewed 6 to 8 times; their verbal and non-verbal behaviors are documented in words. The records are analyzed using phenomenology, including thematic analysis, exemplars, and paradigm cases. The entire research process, including the data collection and analysis, are evaluated by credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability, to make sure the trustworthiness of the research. The research finds that the living experiences of women whose fetus were diagnosed abnormality during the termination of second trimester pregnancy, include, first, feeling ashamed facing family member, second, the termination of feeling toward fetus, third, trapping in sorrow and unhappiness, fourth, wishing the fetus leaving with peace and dignity, fifth, feeling alone and empty during the one-month home recovery period and sixth, contradictory feelings toward pregnancy. This research provides a reference for nursing staff when taking care of women who terminate second trimester pregnancy and assisting them walking out of emotional lowness. |
