Popis: | 95 To evaluate the effects of Acupuncture-like Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (Al-TENS) on pulmonary function, heart rate variability and life quality of children with asthma. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was used, and totally 43 children with asthma were enrolled, among which 20 with mild asthma were assessed from outpatient clinics of certain northern hospital; they were categorized to be experimental group. The other 23 with campus-asthma-management were assessed from schools; they were categorized to the contrast group. The participants received Al-TENS 8 weeks, once a week. The data were collected from Jan. to June in 2007. The measurements included pulmonary function tests, heart rate variability and Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ). After 8 weeks of Al-TENS, there was no difference between two groups in pulmonary function tests of FVC, FEV1/FVC and PEF, and heart rate variability. There were no statistical difference in the quality of life, excluding activity domain. There are two possible reasons to explain why pulmonary function tests have no difference after 8 weeks’ Al-TENS treatment between 2 groups. First, the participants were on stable status when they were measured. Second, the change of the airway remolding was less in patients with mild asthma. 8 weeks is not long enough to change the regulation of automatic nerve system may be the reason why heart rate variability was no difference. Al-TENS relieved the asthma and improved activity domain of the quality of life. |
