This dissertation aims at applying the knowledges of anthropology, semiotics, folk play and folk religions in introducing the Zou-sai Ritual(做獅), recording and analyzing religious ritual: Pa Tian-lou-dei-mweng (打天羅地網) and Zuan-die-siu-hun (轉竹收魂). So-called Sai-diun(獅場) is a large scale of medical ceremony organized by the Red-head Daoists (紅頭法師) in Northern Taiwan, in order to plead for happiness and ward off calamity. Sai-diun ritual was introduced into Taiwan in the middle of Qing Dynasty from Fu-jian, Mainland China. This belonged to San-nai Sect(三奶派) religious ritual which was carried out by the Red-head Daoists, and later on, it was led by Jieng-yi Sect (正一派) Daoist priest. After the World War II, Taiwan has undergone rapid economic development and the freedom of folk religion. In Northern Taiwan, Sang-hein (三獻) Daoist ceremony led by Jieng-yi Taoist priest and the Zou-sai Ritual had gained great popularity. Sang-hein(三獻) had enlarged into a larger scale and regular ceremony, while the Zou-sai Ritual was rapidly declined in thirty years after the World War II, due to the introduction of western medical system. The Zou-sai Ritual were scattered in most of the temples’smaller religious ritual, to comfort those who lack of security and luck. The field study of this dissertation is mainly based on the interview of Jieng-yi Sect Lao Chu Pai (劉厝派) Taoist priest Zhu kuen-chan (朱堃燦), the copy of Lao Chu Pai Zousai Ritual in the early 20th century, the videotape of Sai-diun’s Pa Tian-lou-dei-meng (打天羅地網) in Lao Chu Pai’s Hian Miao Temple recorded in 1984, and also the video tape recorded by Hian Miao Temple’s Zuan-die-siu-huen (轉竹收魂) in 1996. In the context of the Zou-sai Ritual, I will compare and analyze Pa Tian-lou-dei-mweng (打天羅地網) and Zuan-die-siu-huen (轉竹收魂) in the themes of “mockery” and “mystery”, indicating that both have the functions of discarding centrifugal and integrating centripetal force, but in different levels.
