This study aims at understanding the ethnic identity of Taiwan Zhaoan Hakka and multiculturalism aspect is used to investigate the ethnic identity of Zhaoan Hakka. Ethnic identity can be divided into: Ethnic awareness, ethnic self-identification, ethnic patterns and ethnic attitudes. All these will be used as the basis for the discussion of ethnic identity; in addition to understanding Zhaoan Hakka’s ethnic identity, the role played by Zhaoan Hakka in the multi-element society is also discussed from multiculturalism aspect. The Zhaoan Hakka in Lunbei Township and Urlun Township will be divided into three generations in this study, that is: the senior, the youth and the children. Literature analysis, participation and observation, questionnaire survey and semi-structural interview methods will be used in the current study. The research result shows that: Zhaoan Hakka language is seriously lost and the ethnic awareness of Zhaoan Hakka becomes higher as their ages become older; Zhaoan Hakka has very strong ethnic identity and high confidence toward the inside but the interaction with other ethnic group is obviously insufficient; moreover, the self-identification with other ethnic group becomes more hazier and multi-identification is thus formed. The ethnic identity of Zhaoan Hakka is discussed in this study through the current status of cultures which include the relationship between group memory and ethnic identity, such as: language, customs and tradition, sacrifice ceremony, totem, root-searching tour, Zhaoan Hakka culture building, Fu-Lao Hakka cultural festival, etc.; moreover, view point of multiculturalism is used to investigate the ethnic identify of Zhaoan Hakka.
