The Investigation of Piano Graded Examinations held by Taiwan musical institutions-“Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music” vs. “Taiwan United Music Graded Test.” This study is to investigate both “Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music” (ABRM) and “Taiwan United Music Graded Test.” (TUMGT) and their main contents, status quo and students and teachers had prepared both examinations. This study used “Content Analysis”, “Comparative Research” and “in-depth interview” to analyze related journals, newspapers, magazines and literature. This study has sum up the result illustrated by graphs which gives some objective references and recommendations to Piano Beginners and piano tutors. Therefore, this would help them easier to choose the most appropriate institution and teaching courses. This study has shown: 1. (TUMGT) emphasizes on the piano performing styles, postures techniques, and basic ability practicing eg. scale, arpeggio and so on. (ABRM) focuses not only on playing techniques but also the abilities of auditory training and sight-reading. 2.Most students spend much time on preparing the exams, 3~6 months is needed. 3.The purpose of the students is to exam their efforts and makes progress in practice. 4. Most students dislike basic finger practice 5. Most piano lessons focus far more on performing techniques than sight-reading and Listening. 6. In recent years, more piano graded examinations are held in Taiwan which means bunches of people have positive attitude to the music examinations. 7. the selections of (TUMGT) include Chinese pieces which helps students understand Chinese traditional music.
