This paper was aimed at investigating the effect of the rolling contact stiffness due to a change of the loading on the dynamic characteristics of a linear stage. Generally, the contact characteristic between ball and raceway was expected to vary with the loads acting on the mechanism and hence affect its dynamic behavior. To deal with the nonlinearity, a linear spring element with adequate contact stiffness was introduced at the rolling interface. Modal tests were conducted on a linear guide to verify the numerical predicted results. Current results show that finite element approach predict the natural frequency to similar values obtained from experiments. This shows that the proposed method based on Hertz’s contact theory can accurately describe the contact characteristic of a linear guide. Additionally, in modal analysis, current results show that the natural frequencies vary little under different loading conditions, but the vibration modes will change along with the variation of applied moments. This indicates that the stiffness of rolling interface will be properly adjusted under external force, which is expected to affect the dynamic characteristics of structure.
