The digital computer has a significant effect on structural analysis. For example, large problems with thousands of unknowns impossible to investigate by traditional methods can be analyzed and designed using the computer. Although, the principle of virtual work is the basis for the stiffness method, and the principle of complementary virtual work is basis for the flexibility method. The principle of virtual work, like other energy methods of analysis, is based on the conservation of energy for the structure, internal work equals external work. This method for applying the principle of virtual work is often referred to as the method of unit-displacement since a virtual displacement is applied resulting in the calculation of a real force. This method for applying principle of the complementary virtual work is often referred to as the method of unit-load since a virtual force is applying resulting in the calculation of a real displacement. This method of consistent deformations can also be used to investigate the reactions for various structures with multiple redundancies. Basically, the method of consistent displacements involves invoking compatibility using various loading conditions for a statically determinate structure that in derived from the structure being investigated. The derivation for virtual work and consistent deformation is furnished. Emphasis is placed on the physical interpretation of matrices, solution procedures, and interpretation of results. Illustrated examples are also expected for demonstration purposes.
