In intertemporal choice, most economists believe that a rational person should exhibits positive time preference. However, a great deal of behavior evidence suggests that most people exhibit negative time preference rather than positive time preference. While most of relevant researches focus on the comparison between positive and negative time preference, this study provides seven preference patterns for subjects to choose in the context of wage profile and rent. In experiment one, this study examine peoples time preference using the same task as in Loewenstein and Sicherman(1991) study. The main independent variable include the task content(salary/rent), sign of utility(positive/negative), response type(choice/fill in the blanks)and decision time score(one year/six year). To understand the possible causes of people’s time preference, the second experiment try to promote positive time preference either by providing economist’s argument or change the task content from salary, to extra income. The purpose of experiment three is to further examine person’s time preference in the context of hedonic utility, such as scheduling travel arrangement or eating dissert.
