In this study we consider a quartz remanufacturing system with initial testing, remanufacturing, final QC testing, cleaning, packaging, and disposal operations. Customer demands are received by the remanufacturing system. After the quartz has passed the initial testing, it enters the remanufacturing procedures according to customers’ requests. Finally, the finished products are shipped to customers based on delivery time guarantees offered to customers. The remanufacturing system is operated in the remanufacturing to order (RTO) environment, i.e., there is no finished product inventory. Due to long term relationship, the remanufacturer is willing to offer high order fill rate to customers. That is, the remanufacturer needs to pay high penalty cost if the order is late. In this environment, one of methods the remanufacturer can use is expediting policy. That is, we can shorten the operational times by offering more resources to the operations with long operational times. Of course, this will increase the operational costs. Under the premise that the remanufacturer is willing to offer high order fill rate, this study proposes a simulation-based research structure to evaluate the impact of experimental factors (including expediting related factors and order related factors) on the performance of a quartz remanufacturing system. Moreover, the performance of various expediting policies can be compared with respect to different performance indexes. The performance indexes used in the study include system cost, flow time, and fill rate. Finally, a real case is used to demonstrate the research structure. Based on the results of the example, in general, expediting policies 2 and 3 outperform expediting policy 1 with respect to any performance index.
