With the rapid development of mobile technology, young people have formed a digital culture by obtaining mobile devices and playing mobile games. Thus, researchers and educators have begun to explore the potentials of using mobile games in education. This study integrated mobile games with cooperative learning in elementary science course. A mobile game-based learning system was developed focusing on the knowledge on food chain. 58 sixth-grade students with two science teachers from a primary school in Tao-Yuan County participated in the experiment. Students were divided into groups of three, and each held a PDA. They need to win the games in order to gather enough information cards to complete the food chain. The research used interviews, participative observation, questionnaire, and learning sheets to exam students’ and teachers’ viewpoints on learning activities, attitudes and reactions on the application of the mobile game-based learning. The result of the experiment revealed that most students felt the mobile gaming could increase their motivation, and facilitated their learning achievement. With cooperative learning, they can construct their knowledge or modify the concepts by negotiating and discussing with each other. The tests showed that there were no significant differences between pre-test and post-test; but there was a significant difference on the retention test.
