Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are favored for applications in the products of communication, computer and consumer electronics because they compact size, superior performance, highly reproducible and reliable. In addition, the entire market of SAW devices is still in growth and most of the manufacturing capacity has been transferred from the western world to Asia since 2003. In order to catch this trend for the industry of Taiwan, the crucial issue is to establish the design and fabrication technologies for SAW devices of our own. This study is focused on developing the key technologies on SAW design. The topics of this work include surface acoustic wave propagating theory, models used to simulate SAW devices-- theory of coupling-of-modes, equivalent circuit model, and p matrix method and parameters transformation between theory of coupling-of-modes and equivalent circuit model. The modeling, simulation and measurement techniques for different SAW devices used in commercial electronics, such as one-port resonator, comb-type filter, EWC-SPUDT structure, slanted-finger inter-digital transducer filter, ladder-structured and DMS RF filter, surface transverse wave resonator, and balanced mode RF SAW filter, are also discussed in detail. All the devices discussed in this study are verified with experiments. With the completion of this research, we expect to establish the design capability of various SAW devices and provide a very useful knowledge for SAW designers.
