A Study on Work Stress and Coping Strategies of Elementary School Teachers Who Share Administrative Work in Miaoli County

This study aims at probing work stress and coping strategies of elementary school teachers who share administrative work in Miaoli county with different background variables. Attempting to understand the origin of work stress, the difference of work stress and coping strategies of elementary school teachers who share administrative work in Miaoli county with different background. We adopted the following approaches, i.e. literature investigation and questionnaire. Literature investigation is to study the theory and research and build up the basis of research structure. In attaining the purpose of this research, we adopted the questionnaire approach to collect data. Besides, sampling method is stratified random sampling according to the difference of school size and population in Miaoli county. There are 568 administrators to fill out the questionnaires that are the source of work stress scale and coping strategies scale. The SPSS/12.0 statistics software is used to conduct a statistical analysis and test. The conclusions about this study are as following: 1. The work stress for elementary school teachers who share administrative work in Miaoli county have a medium degree. 2. Among those four aspects of work stress, "professional knowledge" and "role conflict" came out at the top, followed by "job burden"、"personal relations". 3. Among those five aspects of coping strategies, "to search for assistance" was most frequently used, followed by, "to try to solve problems by oneself","to change one's mood", "rational thinking " and " to procrastinate". 4. Among those different grouping variables, 4 independents contributed to remarkable differences in the administrators' work stress. That is to say, different ages, years of serving, years of administrative serving concurrently in the present, school size all these lead to varying degrees of work stress. Moreover, the coping strategies also varied with 2 independents. In other words, different years of administrative serving concurrently in the present, school size all these factors result in varying coping strategies. Finally, according to the findings, some concrete suggestions for administrators, school and education system were proposed at the end of this study.
