Popis: | 95 Due to the fast urban expansion, the quality of Taiwanese urban life has gradually degraded. The historic business centers are facing the crisis of business loss that caused by serious traffic problems and the decline of urban life. The early developed historic business center of Taichung city has shown the inadequacy of public facilities. The business of the historic city center of Taichung has downgraded by the rapid development and transformation of social economy and transportation methods. The development of pedestrian streets in Chimending, Taipei, and the well- managed pedestrian area in Jinming 1st street, Taichung, have both demonstrated the possibility for the redevelopment of business centers by the improvement of pedestrian space. The present research discussed how to improve the quality of urban environment through the planning of pedestrian streets. The implementation to reduce or remove certain vehicular traffic can help make streets a lively space for people, improve the business of historic city center and create a place with identity and character. Based on the above research intentions, three research objectives are: (1) To review literature related to the business area in historic city centers and the pedestrian streets in order to summarize the factors for making better pedestrian environment. (2) To understand the feasibility in implementing pedestrian area to historic city centers. (3) To review and study cases of pedestrian streets in both Taiwan and Japan. Three methods were used for the present research: (1) Site analysis for the existing historic city center in Taichung. (2) Observation of behaviors for both the study area and selected case study and analysis of the behavior mappings. (3) Interview of local users and professional groups to summarize their expectations and responses for the proposal on pedestrian streets. The results of the research and analysis were summarized to inform the decision making of street design. Design principles and schemes were proposed as the results of the present research. Physical and digital design models were both used to present the design results. Keywords: Pedestrian Street; Taichung; Urban Life; Historic City Center; Behavior Study |
