The Cost-effectiveness Analysis of Surgical Treatment and Medical Treatment on Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

| Popis: | 95 Primary open angle glaucoma is one type of glaucoma. In the past, patients with advanced glaucoma should receive trabeculectomy if the intraocular pressure was poorly controlled by eyedrops. In recent 10 years, more effective antiglaucomatous eyedrops were developed. Therefore, the numbers of patients who received trabeculectomy was decrease. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost-effectiveness of surgical treatment (trabeculectomy) and medical treatment for primary open angle glaucoma. This is a retrospective study. Enrolled patients received surgical treatment or medical treatment at ophthalmological department of one medical center in central Taiwan during the past twenty years. Patients were divided into surgical group and medical group. The patients of two groups were matched according to gender, age and severity of glaucoma. After review of medical charts, the post-treatment condition was recorded and draw the algorithm of decision tree. The cost, incidence and expected value of all situation were calculated. The results of this study revealed that the cost of surgical treatment was higher than the one of medical treatment in the first year. But the total cost of surgical treatment was lower than the cost of medical treatment in a long period. If 1 NT dollar was spent on surgical treatment instead of medical treatment, it can create 5.291 NT dollar effectiveness. |
