A Study of the Relationship among the Counseling Officer's Job Stress, Social Support and Professional Commitment

Popis: | 93 This study explores the relationships among job stress, social support, and professional commitment of the Counseling Officers in the National Armed Forces. Structured questionnaires, including a Personal Background Profile, a Work Status Scale, a Social Support Scale and a Professional Commitment Scale, are adopted in this study. Among the 236 questionnaires issued, the total response rate was 79% based on 191 valid responses. The following findings are the: 1. The Counseling Officers’ major source of stress come from the feeling resulted of underprepared professional knowledge. The social supports mainly come from their friends and family, with regard to the professional commitment, identity tword jobs scores the highest. 2. A weak negative correlation is shown between social supports and job stress, indicating that social supports help to easing job stress. Social supports and professional commitment reveal a weak positive relationship, indicating that social supports help to enhancing professional commitment. Job stress and professional commitment also present a weak negative correlation, indicating that job stress lower the professional commitment of Counseling Officers. 3. The majority of personal and social back gound variables are not showing their effects within each scale. 4. Social supports play a restraining effect on job stress. As long as the Counseling Officers obtain social support well job stress, negative impact on professional commitment disappears. Social supports alone effectively enhance Counseling Officers' professional commitment. The following suggestions are proposed. On the operation level: (1) Uncover the source of the Counseling Officers' job stress, and further improve the situation. (2) By reducing job stress, Counseling Officers’ may increase their stay. (3) Providing Counseling Officers with a highly social-supported environment. On the policy-marking level: (1) A well-organized plan is urgently needed to Counseling Officers’ professional knowledge. (2) Establish a supervisory organization to strengthen the professional supporting system. For the Counseling Officers, our suggestions are: (1) Search for an appropriate supporting system. (2) Appling appropriate strategies to cope with stress. Finally, for future studies: (1) Expanding subjects and variables. (2) The qualitative research method is considered to further explore the potential causal linkage. |
