Factors Associated With The Utilization of Social Welfare Services By The Elderly In The Town of Lu Kang

This Study is aimed at the influence and utilization of social welfare services for senior citizens in Lu-Kang Town. The total effective sample is 301 including 134 males and 167 females. The study is conducted through field survey with self-designed questionnaire, ”Influence and Utilization of Social Welfare Services for Senior Citizens in Lu-Kang Town.” The final data collected by questionnaires is analyzed by descriptive statistics of T-test, One-Way ANOVA and Chi-Square Test. The main findings of this study are presented as follows: 1) Most of the senior citizens in this study are Fu-Kien people who are either illiterate or elementary school graduated, their marital status is mostly couple-lived, their religious faith is mostly following Taoism or Buddhism. Generally, they have two sons and two daughters. The main health problems for them are high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. They live a simple life in the country-side. Most of the senior citizens are taken care by their children. Their daily expenses are spent for their medical care and meal cost. 2) Free influenza inoculation services are well recognized and accepted by the senior citizens. The highest utilization of social welfare services for free influenza inoculation has been the most noticeable among the senior citizens. The lack of information prevents the senior citizens from using the available services. The service location which is not convenient to the senior citizens also prevents them from using the free services. 3) The demographic characteristics, backgrounds of life-style, and awareness of public services make senior citizen’s utilization and satisfaction of social welfare-services different. 4) The senior citizens expect the regional temples to provide the social welfare services to the neighboring citizens. 5) The senior citizens expect the Lu-Kang Town Hall to provide a bigger space for social welfares services and volunteer services.
