The purposes are to understand the social status of Vietnamese spouses’ elementary school-age children and to analyze the factors influencing the social status. Firstly, to understand the social status of five Vietnamese spouses’ elementary school-age children by using sociometric nomination. Secondly, to find out the influencing factors, by using semi-structured in-depth interviews with five Vietnamese spouses’ elementary school-age children, four Vietnamese mothers, four teachers, and twenty classmates. The main findings were as follows: 1. With regard to social status, there are no significant differences between the social status subgroups. The social status is not influenced by their mothers’ ethnicity. 2. The factors that influenced the social status of Vietnamese spouses’ elementary school-age children were mainly consistent with previous studies carried out in Taiwan. The factors were as follows: (1) Individual factors: these included “personal character”, “appearance”, and “gender”. There were no significant differences between the Taiwanese children and those with Vietnamese mothers. (2) Family factors: these included “the factor of Vietnamese mother”, “child care type”, “Socio-Economic Status” and “parents’ rearing”. However, “family atmosphere” was most important. (3) School factors: these included “teachers’ preference” and “academic achievement”. Moreover, the research found out “parent-teachers interaction” was an influencing factor. Base on the present results, suggestions are made to parents, schools and future researchers. |
