The Investigation of Elementary School Libraries Nowadays in Taichung County

In order to understand the arrangement of impelling children’s reading at each school, I set the national elementary school libraries as examples, planning to do the investigations and researches of book collections, how to make use of the educating to promote the reading activities. I tried to generalize the operation experiences of each school, and tried to provide some feasible advice as the consultation for the managements of elementary school libraries. This study is mainly based on the questionnaires, assisting with some interviews, and the investigators are the superintends of 164 national elementary libraries in Taichung County. I collected the materials and information on the book collections of the elementary libraries at the present, how to use the educating to promote the reading activities; nearly the fifteen years, the elementary libraries in Taichung have been gained, the book collections have been increased in a small range. People going to the libraries to borrow books become much more, and the automatic management equipments are making great meliorations. The strength of efforts is also found the way out in support. However, it is regrettable that the ascent of professionals, the injections of the budgets, the inventory of using teaching materials, the constitution of working guild and the development of book collections are less improving. The promoting of reading activities is still not diversified and varied. I would suggest that the automatic management operations of elementary libraries in Taichung County to take more important on statistic functions on the reporting of data. And, about the book collections, they should take importance to the book features; enhance the cooperation with children’s literature circles. On the management, the superintendents of each school should communicate with each other. Besides, on the use of educating aspect, they should draw up something to use the teaching materials, and build up the sitting elementary school principals and teachers’ specialized further education. At the promoting reading activities, they should also take importance to the cooperation of each office, working out the reading activities together, and offer some reading book lists, in order to establish the reading accents of each school.
