The Study of the Elementary Teacher's Stereotype and Acceptance Attitude toward the Children of Foreign Spouses- From Multicultural Education Point of View

It was important that teachers were fair and gave students equal education opportunity. This study aimed to examine elementary teachers’ attitude toward children of foreign spouses. Did teachers have stereotype toward them? Did teachers accept these students without any -prejudice or discrimination? A questionnaire was used and sent to five hundred and eighty seven elementary school teachers. After data analysis, the results and conclusion were made as follows: 1. Elementary school teachers showed no stereotype toward children of foreign spouses on an overall level. 2. Elementary school teachers showed high level of acceptance toward children of foreign spouses. 3. Gender of elementary school teachers showed significant difference in the stereotype toward children of foreign spouses. For the factor of “living adaptation”, the stereotype of “male” teachers is stronger than that of “female” teachers. 4. Elementary school teachers in “East District of Tainan City” showed the strongest stereotype, and significant difference in factor of “family background”. 5. Elementary school teachers graduated from “teachers’ college” showed stereotype on the “family background” of children of foreign spouses. 6. Elementary school teachers in “age of 41~50” showed high level acceptance toward children of foreign spouses in factor of “classroom management”. 7. Elementary school teachers in “South District of Tainan City” and “managing 12 classes or less” showed higher level of acceptance toward children of foreign spouses. 8. Elementary school “subject teachers” showed higher level of acceptance toward children of foreign spouses, and significant difference in factor of “curriculum design” and “interpersonal perception”. 9. Elementary school teachers with relatives, friends or neighbors married to foreign spouse showed higher level of acceptance toward children of foreign spouses in factor of “cultural knowledge”. 10. Elementary school teachers who gained impression of children of foreign spouses from “the school they serve” showed higher level of acceptance toward children of foreign spouses in factor of “curriculum design”.
