Leisure Activities among Sixth and Seventh graders in Elementary and Junior High Schools in Tainan City

Popis: | 94 This research is to discuss current leisure activities among students in elementary and junior high schools in Tainan city. Students from different social-economical backgrounds were recruited for this research. And the differences in relation to their attitudes, levels of satisfaction, actual participations, and expected participations were to be discussed. Students from 6th and 7th grades in Tainan city were the main subjects in this study. 1052 students from 32 classes in 25 schools were selected. A questionnaire “ Leisure activities in elementary and junior high schools” was used as the testing tool. Descriptive statistics and one-way MANOVA were used for data analysis. The findings include: 1. The attitudes towards leisure activities were noticeably different among students with different genders and social-economical backgrounds in Tainan city. Male students scored higher than female students on questions concerning “cognition”, “emotion” and “behavior”. Students from upper class background scored higher than those from lower class in areas concerning “emotion” and “behavior”. 2. Levels of satisfaction towards leisure activities were also visibly different among students with different genders, age, school districts, and social-economical status. Male students scored higher in questions concerning “psychology”, “education”, “social activity” and “physical ability”. Sixth graders scored higher than seventh graders in “physical ability” area. Students from mid-western school district received the highest score in “education” area. Students from An-Nan district received the lowest score. Students from eastern district scored the highest in “physical ability” area. Students from An-Nan district scored the lowest. Students with higher social-economical status scored higher in “psychology”, “relaxation”, “aesthetics”, “education” and “physical ability” areas. 3. Actual participations in leisure activities were evidently different among students with different genders, age, school districts, and social-economical status. Male students scored higher in “physical ability” area. However, Female students out scored male students in “knowledge” and “aesthetics” areas. Furthermore, students in mid-western district out scored An-Nan district in areas concerning knowledge, entertainment, and aesthetics. 4. Expected participations in leisure activities were evidently different among students with different genders, age, school districts, and social-economical status. Female students and students with higher social-economical status received higher scores on questions concerning knowledge and aesthetics. Moreover, in the aspect of physical ability, sixth graders and students from higher social-economical background had superior scores. |
