The two-tier instrument of the negative integer was employed to assess various error patterns and misconceptions. t-test, ANOVA, and χ2 were used to analyze the data. Several results were found as following. 1.394 students'scores including 41.2% were below to the means. 2.Thirty-nine type’s misconceptions of the negative integer, as well as 8 causes of the negative integer were found. Students had more misconceptions regarding the issues of Absolute Value and Operational axiom. 3.There were no significant differences between male and female students. However, male students had more misconceptions in the issues of Absolute Value and Operational axiom than female students. 4.There were significant differences of total negative integer scores among various district schools. Students'total negative integer scores in city districts were higher than students’total negative integer scores in county districts. Moreover, students’ total negative integer scores in county districts were higher than students’total negative integer scores in remote districts. 5.There were significant differences of total negative integer scores among various social economic statuses. Middle and high social economic statuses students’total negative integer scores were higher than low social economic statuses students’scores. In sum, some conclusions and suggestions were provided for teachers'regarding the negative integer instruction.
