A Study on the Calligraphy Education of Chen Ding-Chi This study attempts to deal with Chen Ding-Chi's ideas and practices concerning calligraphy education and their implications, adoption the methods of theoretical analysis, historical research, and interview. In doing so it is hoped that this study may offer some insights for the current callligraphy education policy and practice. The purpose of this study is as follows: (a) to describe the process of Chen's calligraphy learning and his theory on calligraphy, (b) to analyze Chen's ideas and spirit of calligraphy education, (c) to analyze Chen's calligraphy curriculum and teaching, and (d) based on the above, to summarize the features of Chen's calligraphy education, and the implications for Taiwan's calligraphy education. This study has the following findings: (a) Chen has benefitted from several teachers; his rigorous studies reached certain depths and width. Moreover, he applies both western and Chinese skills to creating the unique and systematic calligraphy theory through his self practice. He analyze the elements of calligraphy, and believes that the essence of calligraphy is to express oneself through artistic skills. He is against the traditional mechanical imitation practice, and advocated a new way of imitating, proving that imitaion is not unconscious copying, but a conscious preparation for creation using scientific methods to explore the principles of calligraphy. And he claimed over and over again that calligraphy creation should have artistic foundations, expressing inner vitality. (b) Chen concentrates on creative teaching, and promotes the matter of learning calligraphy with an attitude of scientific research and arisitic creation, establishing rigorous foundations of calligraphy, emphasizing the importance of the appliance of educational theories while practicing calligraphy teaching, as well as making calligraphy an independent discipline and training professional calligraphy teachers. He indicates that the goal of calligraphy education is not only on training students' writing skills and knowledge, but also on cultivating their creativity and aesthetic perception, and the building of their characterisic. He used systematic methods to arrange the learning principles of each calligraphy style. His teaching is conscientious, vigorous, special, and renewed. He builds a systematic theory, contributes whole- heartedly, and is well enough to say that his could be placed as a model. (c) Chen emphasizes that the structure of calligraphy curriculum, the arrangement of textbooks, the method of teaching, and the relevation of students must all be planned systematicly and scientificly. He points out that calligraphy must be taught concerning the difference of each individual, and it must also be taught gradually. Calligraphy expression and appreciation should be equally emphasized, and the evaluation on students' calligraphy learning should be based upon the improvement of his or her characteristics. Based on the above findings, the features of Chen's calligraphy education can be summarized as follows: (a) objective and scientific methods, (b)attitudes of self-expression and innovation, (c) the revolution of teaching materials and methods, (d) individualized teaching, (e) building of the systematic theory of calligraphy education, and (f) the final goal as improving one's personlity and understanding of Tao (way of the world). The implications for the current calligraphy education pollicy and teaching practices are stated as follows: (a) reconfirming the value of calligraphy education, (b) applying the current artistic education policies into calligraphy education, (c) building artistic calligraphy education system, (d) cultivating professional calligraphy teachers, and (e) improving calligraphy teaching and evaluation methods.
