Stereo-photography was invented more than a century ago. Since analog stereoscopic images require relatively high technique and cost to produce, it has not evolved much in visual arts during these years. As digital era comes, personal computers are more widespread and it’s much easier to make stereoscopic images by digital methods. However, there still are some technical and theoretical issues needed to be discussed during the making of stereoscopic movies and interactive stereoscopic animation. The goals of this thesis include analyzing the available literatures, experimenting on some techniques, creating experimental artworks of 3 different stereoscopic art forms and exploring the trend of stereoscopic art. After a bundle of literatures analyzing and techniques experimenting, three art forms of stereoscopy were developed including still stereoscopic images, stereoscopic movies and interactive stereoscopic animation. Corresponding to each art form, series of artworks were created by using materials of both photographic images and computer generated graphics. At the end all experimental art works were integrated, designed and presented on web pages as a piece of work of web art. The conclusions of this thesis include: 1. It is a trend to produce stereoscopy digitally. 2. It is getting more important to use computer generated graphics as resource images in stereoscopy making. 3. The web is the new media for transmitting and spreading stereoscopy. At the meantime, the suggestions are: 1. Mastering the operation of equipment and integration of software. 2. Merging the skills of various art forms. 3. Increasing the aesthetic and artistic value in stereoscopic art works.
