The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effect of the semi-active control system in reducing the vibration of structures. Fuzzy control strategy is used to search the suitable control force of the magnetorheological damper. By using genetic algorithm, the most suitable fuzzy rules could be found for each of the different earthquakes in an efficient manner. The benchmark structure analyzed is the three-floor steel structure installed in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taipei, and the structure is simulated as a shear frame in the numerical analysis. Using fuzzy theory with the control rules which are found by genetic algorithm to operate MR-damper, it can provide good result of reducing the seismic responses of structures subjected to earthquake excitations. The efficiency of the semi-active control systems with different fuzzy control rule is investigated and compared. Computer software Matlab is used as the simulating tool in the analyzing steps.
