Due to the current development of the Internet technologies, multimedia communications have evolved to real-time playback at remote clients without full download. However, most media streaming data is delivered in a well-know compressed format. Malicious users can easily eavesdrop media packets transmitted on the public Internet. Therefore, providing media streaming on the Internet incurs the important issues of privacy and security in the media delivery. The real-time multimedia network applications apply streaming technologies to playback the delivered multimedia data without fully downloading the whole media file. Remote users can playback the media data right after they issue requests of service. That is to say, every delivered media packets have to arrive at the client in time. The client can playback the arrival packets smoothly without degradation of perceptive quality. Due to strictly timing constraints of media streaming, if we apply time-consuming encryption methods to provide security protection for media streaming, we must face the challenge to keep the playback quality of multimedia streaming. Therefore, without degrading the playback quality of media streaming, we propose a scheme, called BFSC(Buffer-occupancies Feedback Security Control), which use the feedback controls of playback buffer occupancy to respectively adjust the applied encryption methods and the media sending rates. Because the variation of the playback buffer occupancy from the uncertainties in public network and applied systems, the applied encryption methods will be dynamically changed. Moreover, while the encryption methods cannot be changed within a long period, we will apply the Diffie-Hellman key exchange method to dynamically change the encryption keys to maintain the robustness of protection during the streaming service session. Therefore, not only the system resources of key database can be saved while dynamically changing keys, but also the protection of media streaming will be enhanced while coupled with the BFSC algorithm. To demonstrate our proposed security scheme (BFSC) for media streaming, we will apply it into a VOD (Video On Demand) system. Through experimental results and analysis by applying various well-known encryption schemes (such as DES, Double DES, Triple-DES, AES, etc.), we believe that our proposed BFSC is able to achieve privacy and security without degrading the playback quality of multimedia streaming.
