Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are composed of a large number of sensor nodes. These sensors with low-power, low-cost processor, and have the capability of wireless communication. Sensor nodes are usually deployed in some regions to collect useful data and transmit it to the distant base station. However, due to the limited battery power, if each node transmits its sensing data to the base station directly, it will consume more energy and drain the energy off quickly, even though the transmission delay is minimized. In this paper, we proposed Hierarchical Data Gathering (HDG) schemes in WSNs, which achieve balance between the total energy consumption and the transmission delay. HDG manages nodes into a hierarchical grid structure in order to reduce the total energy consumption and utilizes the tree architecture to reduce the transmission delay. Simulation results show that HDG has better performance in terms of the number of rounds, coverage-preserving and the energy × delay cost comparing to other data gathering protocols under different network sizes and node density.
