Popis: | 93 Taiwan is an Asian country teeming with bamboo timber. In an era that technology and machinery were still undeveloped, our ancestors, whether Han immigrants or Malaya-Polynesian aborigines, utilized local materials to develop furniture with special local features; the furniture displayed and recorded Taiwan’s abundant and vigorous culture traits. However, with the changing of time and the development of science, new materials and the progress in skills also changed the important status the Taiwan Bamboo Craft played in Taiwan people’s culture. The existing documents about Taiwan Bamboo Craft are very rare; the existing relevant research materials are quite limited, too. It’s during July 2003 to August 2004, a one year preliminary observation of the courses in the National Taiwan Craft Research Institute in Bamboo Craft and bamboo plaiting that draws the researcher’s attention to the failing of Bamboo Crafting skills and the need of further research and analysis. The study began with a review of existing relevant researches in Bamboo Crafts and their culture traits. After refining the related contents and categorizing important references, a field investigation was laid out; 11 bamboo shops chosen from the north, middle and south parts of Taiwan were investigated and their regional differences and present business conditions are analyzed. In addition, the study also gathered the opinions of 3 experts in bamboo crafting with semi-structured interviews to construct the foundation of relevant knowledge with Grounded Theory, combined with the results of EGM (Evaluation Grid Method),an in-depth interview method, from 10 users of bamboo crafts, 5 evaluation structure graphs were plotted. The graphs showed the bamboo crafts’ physical cultural traits in modeling, material, color, skill and technique, also the spiritual cultural traits in cultural background and lifestyle. This final result of research revealed that Taiwan Bamboo Crafts contain physical cultural traits of diverse shaping and modeling, expended innovations, and being durable, pleasant and rich in tradition. It’s shaping styles could be divided into 3 types: simple and beautiful furniture for everyday use, magnificently decorated bamboo artistic crafts, and modern furniture that prefer simplification than complexity. The materials used include bamboo tubes, which are thick and durable, and bamboo peel, which can “breath” naturally and is with plasticity that is capable of expansion and contraction, and is beautiful and light in quantity. The main strains of bamboo used were Makino Bamboo, Moso Bamboo, Thorny Bamboo, and Long-branch Bamboo. The colors vary with natural hues, glamour with simplicity and mellow tones, and draw people’s feelings of geniality; they can be described as soft or emerald green, green, golden yellow, sandy maroon, dark brown, coffee color, chestnut, and sepia. As for the specialty in skills, craftsmen used purely handwork with flexibility, showed intelligence in inheriting traditions and enlightening the successors, cultivating an unique Taiwan style; two skills , “ ut loo” and “chak loo”, were used, as well as tool employment. On the other hand, the spiritual cultural traits on the culture background displayed inheritance of master-and apprentice systems, hands-on experiences that bore hardships, a to-be-content-with-what-one-is philosophy, and sharp skills that refined complexity to simplicity. The life-style characters showed a content and self-sustaining rural style, a model of development of utilizing local materials, hand-made crafts for daily use, and enjoyment of scholarly craftsmanship. The intentions of the study and analysis are to help the design and manufacture of Taiwan’s bamboo timber products, combine cutting-edge tools and technology to create fine products with innovation, and to boost the cultural connotation and quality in Taiwan’s design. |
