In modern society, mass media has become the main source of political information for the general public. Mass media has played a crucial role in providing the public with good and high-quality political information. This essay examines the patterns of media attention by comparing three of Taiwanese newspapers-the United Daily, the China times, and the Liberty times on two different issues(referendum issue and Yang's offender event), and also compare the positions between these newspapers and the policy preference of the general public by case. In this essay, we identified that the contents of the newspapers in such cases were similar. On the other hand, the preference of the news contents were differ from these newspapers and news patterns(news story、op-ed、opinion columns and editorial). We also found that the positions of news contents and the policy preference of public were quite consist. In short, public opinion tends to move toward the direction presented by the press. Secondly, from our case study, we found different newspaper outlets tend to take distinctive stands. For instance, in the case of constitutional referendum, the United Daily took different stands in different news patterns, compared with the other newspapers under examination. In the case of referendum on unification-independence, the United Daily display more favorable news of this proposal, while taking different positions in other news patterns.
