Popis: | 93 “Inferiority and Superiority” in Young Adult Novels Liang, Ya-Wen Abstract The concept of “inferiority and superiority” is one of the most important achievements of the famous psychoanalyst Alfred Adler. According to him, one will have to face challenges from the sense of inferiority, and try hard to overcome the sense of inferiority for gaining the sense of superiority through one’s life. While examining Adler’s theory in detail, we can find a similarity as the ageless topic “maturity and initiation” in adolescent fiction. This thesis is based on Adler’s concept, trying to discuss the process of how the characters overcome their senses of inferiority and try hard to gain their senses of superiority in young adult novels. Not only did the researcher analyze the causes of characters’ inferiority, but also thoroughly discuss the inferiority complex and superiority complex which appeared when a person tries to evade the threat of inferiority feeling; furthermore, the researcher thoroughly examined how the only way to overcome inferiority feeling—the social interest—is represented in young adult novels. At the intersection of young adult novels and Individual Psychology, we can explore the values inside the topic “maturity and initiation” from a different angle. |
