The three major TFT-LCD manufacturing processes are TFT array, cell assembly, and module assembly. The yields of TFT array process and cell assembly process are above 90%, and module assembly process has the lowest yield among the whole manufacturing. In the cell forming process of cell assembly, when a defective panel of a TFT glass substrate is assembled with a non-defective panel of a CF glass substrate, it will cause a loss of CF glass which will increase the cost. In order to reduce the losses, the purpose of the thesis is to solve problems effectively for cell forming operation. To solve the matching problem of the TFT glass and CF glass in cell forming operation of the cell assembly process, we propose a linear programming to solve the problem. The focus of this study is to reduce the amount of the panel loss due to the assembly of non-defective panels and defective panels and to reduce the amount of shortage for the following operation. The objective function of our linear programming model is to minimize the total cost of losses and backorder. In practice, there are no specific control rules to assemble two glass substrates but to assemble them by their arrival sequence. Thus we compare the linear programming model and random method to find out whether the linear programming model can efficiently improve the losses from the random method. The results show that the total cost of the linear programming model is always lower than those of the random method, and the loss panels within TFT glass substrates and within CF glass substrates of the linear programming model are significantly fewer than those of the random method. The linear programming model improves the current practice of random method.
