A Case Study of Shaping a Learning School:Taking an Elementary School in Taichung City as an Example Advisor:LIAO, CHUN-WEN Author:SHIH, FU-WEI Abstract This study was adopted a qualitative research to study an elementary school in Taichung City. Some relevant data from literature reviews, interviews, participant observations and document analyses were collected and analyzed. It was hoped to explore the current situation, practical obstacles, and the influences of shaping the learning school. Based on the above, the study was summarized as follows. 1. The current situation to shap a learning school was to (1)Increase the interaction of the staffs, including the teachers and the administrative staffs, in this school, (2)Implement a thinking system to establish a feed-back mechanism, to build a sharing vision, to improve the professional growth, as well as to activate curriculum development by strengthening the team learning of all staffs, and (3)Promote teaching activities of life education by building a professional team of teachers in order to establish the environment of ecological school. 2. The obstacles of the shaping a learning school were to (1)Show that the staffs of this school lacked of the system-thinking ability and paid less attention to the rapidly social changing of their environment, (2)Indicate the lack of flexibility of educational policy, which result in the lack of the chance for the school staffs to be professional, (3)The learning organization lacks the ability of technology and therefore can’t establish effective learning mechanism, (4)Reveal that a leader of a school lacks the ability to cognize the importance of the learning organization so that s/he oppose the learning of his/her teachers, and (5)Display that a school was usually influenced by the limitations of time and space so it was difficult to form a new organizational culture of learning. 3. The strategies to form learning school were to (1)Build a quality of a learning organization and focus its staffs’ concerns on establishing a sharing vision, (2)Assist a leaders of the school to be self-reflexive and to form a learning organization, (3)Allow the free expression of staffs to inspire their innovations and to create an environment of sharing new knowledge, (4)Establish an atmosphere of cooperative teaching to develop the function of peer checking, and (5)Establish a school-wide web site to cater to both teachers and students for teaching-and-learning materials. 4. The influences of forming a learning school were to (1)Help to establish an open, warm, supporting and reliable school climate, (2)Assist to promote its teachers’ professional growth, (3)Offer multi-innovative learning styles, (4)Inspire the enthusiasm of students to explore their knowledge, to enhance cooperative learning as well as to increase self-oriented learning ability, and (5)Involve its parental participation to enrich the teaching activities. According to the above, the study propose some suggestions for future study and offer a reference point for other elementary schools as well as the bureaus of education.
