A Study of Relationship between Location Factors and Performance --A Case Study of Bank of Taiwan

| Popis: | 93 Banks are often considered as the core of financial systems. In the ever-changing international environment, banks take important role in supplying national economical growth. With the new trend of financial deregulation, innovation and computerization, banking industry has had structural transformations since 1991. In order for banks to survive and prosper, merging and new changes are inevitable. Superior banking location is prioritized in these concerns. This research conducts statistical analysis on correlation between location factors of each Bank of Taiwan branches and their performances. This research is to conclude the importance of location factor of a bank and its operational performances. The analysis is done through references collecting, foundation research, questionnaires with 102 Bank of Taiwan (BOT) branches as samples and evaluations of current banking environment. The purpose of this research is to clarify decisive factors of relationship between bank location and operational performances and help banks for future decision-making. This research takes relationship of competition and cooperation, characteristics of population, site and area, traffic volume, negative factors and visibility as independent variables and average profit (operational performance) over last 5 years (1999-2003) as dependant variable. The performance of each BoT branch is divided into 2 time intervals based on when the branch was funded and analyze the relation of variables. There are 3 major procedures in research process design, firstly, samples are taken repeatedly and reviewed by experts to ensure its validity. Secondly, calculate the mean and deviation of each item of location factors by conducting descriptive statistics. Lastly, enter step regression analysis in each period with location factors and bank operational performance indexes and create regression models. The value of R square and βvalue from regression model indicates how closely related each location factor is to operational performance, thus priority orders can be sorted. The research results are as follows: 1. The reliability of R square is higher if more samples are taken; if both time and space are considered in the calculating methods. 2. Relationship of competition and cooperation is mostly related to operational performance in all time intervals (1946-1999) but it is the division of land use has the highest priority. Hence, we can conclude that financial area has attraction to customers; land use divisions such as business area and special area (scientific park, airport and ect.) have highest priority and are the most dominant factors to increase bank’s operational performance. 3. In early 90’s, most dominant factor to bank’s operational performance is still land use division, reasons are same as above. The second dominant factor is traffic volume. High urbanization and fast economic growth play important role in area division. On top of these two factors, the population, social security and bank competitors also affect operational performance greatly. 4. In late 90’s, traffic volume became an extremely important factor. One of the sub-factor, distance to intersection, has high absolute value of 0.452, convenient transportation and speed are customers’ main concerns. The second and third main factors are social security and land use division. 5. As far as the time and space aspect are concerned, the visibility of buildings, area type and traffic volume become more important as time goes by. Contrarily, Characteristics of population, site and area and negative factors become slightly less important. 6. Based on the relation of location factors and operational performance, the high operational performance and growth rate of Taipei Dun-Hwa branch and low operational performance and negative growth rate of Su-Ao branch follow the correlation of location factor and performance. Thus, it has ensured certain reliability of this research. |
