The uses of back channels by the Taiwan's students of Japanese-expression forms

The trend of studying the backchannel prevails in recent years. However, whether the differences of the learning phase or the contents of the textbook are relevant to the responses that students take does’t fully understand。The author is based on the research of the selected groups, including the second and third grade students of Ming Chuan University, to elevate these two specific points. The survey uses the tape records to analyze. To any grade,the back channel that the learner used most is ”hai”,and secondly is ”n”;but no one uses ”ee”. Both ”hai” and ”ee” are the replies to express respect. The reason of why the learners didn’t say ”ee ”is the influence of the native language. Moreover, when some parts of the students consider their answers, they would make sounds like ”ee”, or similar ones ”e-” .Therefore,it doesn’t substantiate the claims that people use ”ee” rarely because ”ee” is difficult to make sounds. Further, how are the three backchannel mentioned in the textbooks? The survey investigates the textbooks in the Ming Chuan University. The result demonstrates that to those who are older or to strangers, student uses “hai” and ”ee” more frequently。In the other sides, however, the tape records show that the most responses that students take to teachers is “hai” and the secondly reply is ”n” .The explanation of why the learner answer ”n” is that when students use ”n”, they didn’t remind the information listed in the textbooks. Besides, the back channels that express questioning, understanding and approval in the Japanese conversion are rarely used, for example: ”soudesuka” ↑, ”soudesuka” ↓ and ”soudesune”. Therefore, the author describes the instruction of ”ee”, ”soudesuka” ↑, ”soudesuka” ↓ and ”soudesune” separately in chapter 4.
