Communication among the agents in a multiagent system usually employs some standardised protocols or natural languages such as knowledge query and manipulation language (KQML). This thesis develops, and also implements, a communication scheme for agents in a multiagent system. In stead of using conventional manners, the proposed method presents in terms of the finite state machine(FSM). It is simpler than the convention manners, and is also easier for implementation. A FSM diagram is first designed for each agent. This FSM diagram instructs the individual agent to work in a multiagent environment. It contains a few finite states for describing an agent''s behaviour, and it also arranges the coordinating procedures among agents. Next, a Java-based computer program is coded to implement this FSM diagram. This program is constructed on the basis of multicast technique for the sake of reducing the computer network bandwidth. Several case studies, including the coordination in the two-agent and three-agent system, have been demonstrated in the end of this thesis. The results shall justify the feasibility of the proposed method.
