This study is based on Porter’s (1990) “Diamond System” in his book “The Competitive Advantage of Nations” to analyze the terms of developing refractory industry in Taiwan. Using Five Force analysis and SWOT analysis to summarize which competitive strategies that Refractory producers can adopt, the main spirit of this study is to provide some ideas for Refractory producers in Taiwan, especially when they draft competitive strategies. Nowadays, the domestic refractory producers are facing several problems: because everyone in the industry produces similar products with technique in same level, their customers enjoy more bargaining power both on the price and the supplier selection; uneasy for this kind of traditional industry to expand overseas markets; great percentage of raw materials are allied to be imported from foreign countries, especially from Mainland China; not enough economic scale in production and the lack of capability for technical development, etc. Besides, someday if refractory products made in Mainland China were allowed to be imported into Taiwan market, most of domestic refractory factories will be in big trouble because of huge pressure caused from direct low price attack. Steel industry has been grown with Taiwan economic for decades and it also brings development of domestic refractory industry. However, the downstream customers’ good ability in price negotiation, changes of international mineral materials’ quantity and price as well as the whole industrial environment are the factors that have caused stress of converging attack from upstream and downstream. Long-term ways to solve these problems will be depended on government‘s assistance in domestic refractory technical personnel training and technology development, guiding producers to expand overseas markets, relaxing restrictions of refractory material waste recycling. In addition, domestic refractory producers should renew their plans for production line and firmly cooperate with others in the same industry. |
