With a tremendous increasing of Internet users, the issues of how these users search tour information via this new source and their derived information behavior have been emphasized. The primary objective of this study was to identify distinct segments within Internet-based tour information searchers. The data collection involved an on-line survey conducted by one of major portal websites in Taiwan. A questionnaire containing a scale in relation to information search was used. A total of 581 usable responses were obtained. The result of factor analysis revealed four dimensions extracted, including hedonic motivation, reduce uncertainty, socialized motivation and utilitarian motivation. Using the four motivation dimensions as cluster variables, the on-line tour information searchers were then categorized into four segments: function-oriented, affective gratification, information browsing, and smart shopping. The characteristics of the four segments were described and the differences among them were compared in terms of their browsing behavior and information search strategies. In light of our findings, we draw managerial implications relating to tourist information search in the context of the Web, and offer suggestions for future research.
