In this thesis, we investigate some methods for coarse frame detection in IEEE 802.11a system, for example, Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), Maximum Correlation (MC), Maximum Likelihood (ML), Correlation Coefficient, Maximum Normalized Correlation (MNC) and Modified Maximum Normalized Correlation (MMNC). These methods are used for coarse frame detection, which methods are suitable for different conditions. However, there is a common problem for all above methods called false alarm. This issue will affect the following signal process of the system and the whole performance. Under the situation that the complexity and the computation of the system will not be increased much, we propose the correlation coefficient method with energy ratio to prevent false alarm. This proposed method combines the advantages of correlation coefficient and energy ratio. Mathematical analyses as well as simulation results indicate that “correlation coefficient with energy ratio” is a suitable method for coarse frame detection in IEEE 802.11a system. At last, we set thresholds according to the expected signal to noise ratio (SNR) and packet error rate (PER).
