The proliferation of notebook computers and portable devices places an ever-increasing demand on display technology. The current trend of LCD development is towards lightness, thinness and large size. An ideal backlight source should provide high brightness, high efficiency, high dimming ratio and high stability. In this thesis, an FPGA-based driving system for LCD backlight is presented. The proposed system consists of an FPGA-based digital controller and a switch-mode full-bridge inverter power stage operating in zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition to increase the conversion efficiency. The inverter is used to drive a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) operated under rated current. In this thesis, low frequency dimming control and Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) dimming control are both proposed to regulate the brightness of lamps. According to the experimental results, the proposed system actually meets the demand of ideal backlight source.
