As mass customization has become an irresistible trend, today’s manufacturing companies must be able to deliver custom-designed products within a short lead-time. This is especially true for the upstream companies in a supply chain who provide components for downstream manufactures. To make the components better fit into a new design or a modified product, the downstream manufactures usually want to customize several features of the upstream components. The customization or change is explained during the order-taking stage between the salesperson and the customers. In this research we enhance Yen and Ng’s dynamic product catalog system (2003) to develop a web 3D collaboration system to support the order-taking process of custom-designed products. A complete VR model is used to specify interaction and animation to demonstrate the product’s structures and functions. We discuss how to incorporate a VR model template that includes generic scene graph and specific animation circuit to develop a variant-based approach for product configuration. Then we describe technology that allows the salesperson and the customers to perform collaborative 3D product viewing and configuration. Finally, we discuss a real-world case in which we apply the web 3D collaboration system developed in this thesis to support the order-taking process of an ODM company that designs and manufactures hydro-pneumatic cylinders.
