Biodegradable polyesters with high value and high quality are one of important issues in biomedical material development. This article reports the patent technology information in the year of from 1971 to August 2004 based on the European Patent Database for biodegradable polyesters in medical applications. It has been found that about 380 patents are related to biodegradable polyesters for medical or hygienic applications. Based on International Patent Classification, these patents are subsequently divided into five classes which are 1) diagnosis; surgery; identification, 2) implants or implantable devices, 3) preparations, systems or compositions for pharmaceuticals or medical applications, 4) materials for bandages, dressings or surgical articles, and 5) devices for transporting medicine. According to above classification, it shows that 9 patents relate to diagnosis, surgery or identification, 60 patents relate to implants or implantable devices, 200 patents relate to preparations, systems or compositions for pharmaceuticals or medical applications, 90 patents relate to materials for bandages, dressings or surgical articles, and 8 patents relate to devices for transporting medicine. As indicated in the above patents, at present the biodegradable polyesters for medical applications still emphasize on the medicine transportation systems and devices, on modifying the constitutes (such as biodegradable polymeric materials having COO- or NR4 + group for binding bioactive molecules), characteristics (such as a polyester baskbone having a phosphate or a phosphonate incorporated thereinto) and types (such as nano sized medicine system which is smaller and easily penetrates the cell membrane of target cell) of polymeric materials. The wound management focuses on the development of biodegradable and injectable hydrogels used in implants or drug delivery (which are liquid at room temperature and solidified at body temperature) and sutures with high strength and without side effect. The tissue engineering focuses on the development of scaffolds for orthopedics and the regeneration of tissues for organs.
