Invesigation of carbon nanotubes grown on carbon cloth for DMFC applications

Popis: | 92 The CNTs were grown directly on carbon cloth for application of anode of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The Pt and Ru electrocatalysts were sputtered on CNTs and carbon cloth by PVD process. The preparations of CNTs included two procedures. Firstly, Fe was sputtered on carbon cloth as the nano-catalyst for CNTs growth. Secondly, thermal CVD was used to grow CNTs on carbon cloth by flowing ethylene into the reactor at 900 ℃. SEM observation showed uniform CNTs grown on the carbon cloth. TEM observation showed an averages CNT diameter about 200 nm. To compare the electrochemical properties of carbon cloth with and without CNTs, 10 mM K3(Fe(CN)6) + 1 M H2SO4 solution was used for the CV measurements. The results show that the carbon cloth with CNTs has better electrochemical activity than without CNTs. To compare methanol-oxidized reaction at carbon cloth with and without CNTs using Pt and Ru as electrocatalysts, CV (Cyclic voltammetry) measurements were taken in 1 M H2SO4 + 1 M CH3OH solution. When single Pt electrocatalyst is used, the anodic sweep current peak of carbon cloth with CNTs is higher than carbon cloth without CNTs. When Pt and Ru were sputtered on carbon cloth with CNTs, which the sample was rotating during sputtering, Pt and Ru atoms become well mixture coating on CNTs. CV measurements showed that Pt-poisoning can be effectively detoxified after Ru incorporated. Carbon cloth with CNTs has high electrochemical activity and Pt-Ru binary electrocatalysts can be uniformly dispersed on CNTs, and suggesting the carbon cloth with CNTs can be good anode for DMFC. |
