The Effect of Partner Behavioral Affirmation on Psychological Well-being:The Mediation Process of Personal and Relational Self Certainty

| Popis: | 92 Drigotas (1999, 2002) demonstrated the effect of behavioral affirmation of close partner on couple/personal well-being, but failed to discover the changing process of self. To re-examine the self-identity process in close relationships, the current study first distinguished two levels of self-identity. That is, the individual level and the relational level of self-certainty. I then tested the relationship among partner behavioral affirmation, self-certainty, and psychological well-being. Two hypotheses were proposed. First, partner behavioral affirmation did not have a direct effect on one’s well-being. Instead, its effect was mediated by self-certainty. Secondly, I also hypothesized that two levels of self-certainty played different roles. The self-certainty at the individual level recursively interacted with partner behavioral affirmation, in other words. Whereas, the self-certainty at the relational level mediated the association between partner behavioral affirmation and psychological well-being. The results supported our hypotheses. First, there were significant correlations between partner behavioral affirmation and psychological well-being. Second, there were significant correlations between partner behavioral affirmation and individual/relationship self-certainty. Finally, the mediation analyses showed that individual self-certainty and partner behavioral affirmation concurrently had effects on some psychological well-being indices. On the other hand, relational self-certainty mediated the association between partner behavioral affirmation and psychological well-being. Accordingly, we suggested the differentiation between individual level and relational level of self-certainties is the key to study the self-identity processes in close relationships. |
