Applying Data Envelopment Analysis to TFT-LCD Industry Suppliers'Performance Evaluation

From the development of entire computer market, the trend of TFT-LCD replacing traditional CRT is obvious. The competition of domestic TFT-LCD panel production thus turns drastic. While the demand of TFT-LCD is increasing, companies, which can respond the requirements more quickly will enjoy the competitiveness, thus increase their market shares. Since TFT-LCD industry is more assembly-line in nature, coordinated performance of the whole supply chain plays an important role in achieving responsiveness. The performance of suppliers thus becomes a big concern for TFT-LCD panel manufacturers. Data Envelopment Analysis is applied as the primary tool for analysis of supplier performances. CCR model, BCC model, and Window analyses are conducted using data from case company’s printed circuit board(PCB)suppliers. Data covers year 2000 to 2001 for eight seasons. Window analysis is carried out primarily on the basis of three seasons. Changes of the performance for each supplier is analyzed and discussed in details. The results showed that the performance achievements of PCB suppliers appear stable and have increasing trends in returns-to-scale. This indicated that there are still chances for further investment in PCB (supplier) industry. Further slacked-variable data analysis was conducted in search of each PCB supplier’s potential in resource investment. Finally, cross analysis was performed with annual stockholder report of each PCB supplier. Based on research results, suggestions about further improvement for each supplier and suggestions about supplier selection for panel manufacturer were provided in expectation to be helpful for the competitiveness of TFT-LCD panel industry.
