Improved IEEE 802.11 Handoff Latency using Fuzzy Logic

Multimedia is a delay sensitive application in internet. And what is more, because mobile station is moving all the time causing the consequent handoff processes inevitable in wireless network environment. Since the handoff processes tend to break the communication, main goal of this thesis is to reduce the break time and arrival delay while using the multimedia applications in internet. In this thesis, we propose using Fuzzy Logic to evaluate mobile station’s received average of signal strength and variation of signal strength to conclude a FitAP factor. This factor represents to which degree indicating the possibility of handoff of access point (AP) that mobile station fits. In accordance with FitAP factor, mobile station just need to execute active scan process only once to obtain complete handoff parameters. Therefore, smaller handoff latency is expected. Finally, we compare the results of using a current cell search scheme with cell search using Fuzzy Logic. Through statistics results, it is clear that proposed method outperforms the current cell search scheme with improved performance in terms of handoff latency.
