Adaptive learning can make learning more effective and efficient. This thesis addresses an adaptive self-learning framework design on the web and its real implementation to assist learners in online English grammar self-study. With the rapid advance in web technologies, people have been enabled to get more information or knowledge simply through a click on hyperlink of a browser─ a very easy way that never happened before. Because web-based self-learning does not involve instructor’s online guidance, learning efficacy and interest may soon decrease especially when the system always presents unchanged order of content to users, regardless of other important factors: whether the content is difficult or not, and whether the content has been visited, learned, or not yet. This is a notable shortcoming because different learners should have different knowledge backgrounds and thus reflect different efficiency in learning─ that should be seriously considered in a knowledge delivery process, as what a teacher does. This study investigates those issues to design an adaptive self-learning framework that can adjust presentation, and level of content details to users, according to their traced learning profile. In implementation, we use English grammar as the learning target to construct the domain model and realize a system prototype, in which learners can study the customized, adaptive online materials. The evaluation result shows that most learners agree that the system can make self-learning more efficiently. Furthermore, most learners are satisfied with the features provided by the system.
