An analysis of Female Stereotype in Taiwan's And Japan's Television Variety Shows

There is no doubt that people who born in 20th century, grew up in an environment with excessive exposure to media and are deeply influenced by the mass media. The mass-media images dominate greatly and influential public education to these peoples and dominates their perspectives of their-selves、gender、national identity and other major concepts. They receive and deliver new messages through media Therefore, TV influences a lot to people’s life、thinking、attitude、behaviors and even the entire culture. However, biased gender ideology always transmitted by television programs, especially the variety shows for entertainment and profit-oriented television commercial. The majority of variety shows are hosted by males and as a result, their prejudice can be seen and indeed exist everywhere. They tend to disrespect, objectify and stereotype female role. Since those prime-time variety shows are always achieve a high audience’s perceptions of gender.As a result,we simply cannot overlook this situation. The main purpose of the study is to explore how gender bias are “expressed” whether Taiwan’s or Japan’s variety shows. I use content analysis of week-end variety shows in Taiwan’s wireless television stations from October 2003 to April 2004. The focus is on the analysis of language so as to understand female ideology and female role variety program. In addition, sample from Japanese variety shows are also studied in order to make the comparison between these two highly related cultures. This study concludes the followings: (1) The variety shows are dominated by male hosts with female actors playing as minor role. Whether Japan or Taiwan. (2) The variety shows in Taiwan emphasized female’s appearance and positive male-centered characters on the other hand. (3) There are plenty of genda bias planted in throughout the show, and filled with patriarchy- ideology from male’s perspectives, including shooting、units designed and dialogue using to express、to discuss、 criticize and to derogate female. (4) The female role, which is constructed by the variety shows, might affect audiences perspective about gender equity and respect.
