A Model of Innovative Design Collaboration between University and Industry – A Case of Tsannkuen Multination Group

| Popis: | 91 Design collaboration between industry and university is an important gateway to the development of new product concepts, not only to satisfy industry’s need for innovation, but also to integrate resources between industry and university in order to enhance best performance. The objectives of this study are: 1) to investigate the types and outcomes of design collaboration between industry and university in fulfilling the requirement for innovation in industry; 2) to realize the procedures and contents of design collaboration between industry’s in-house design department and university; and 3) to propose a model of innovative design collaboration based on this investigation. This research first reviewed the related literature about the growth of corporations, the needs for innovation, outcomes and models of design collaboration between industry and university, and then studied the cases to explore the corporation backgrounds and the development and change of in-house design departments, in order to generalize the models. An indepth investigation was conducted with the Tsannkuen Group, a design oriented medium-sized enterprise, to summarize a practical model for innovative design collaboration. The primary findings of this study include: 1) “Product Roadmap” and “Product Value Analysis” are useful tools to check the outcome of design collaboration. 2) The current procedure of design collaboration is helpful in idea generation for teaching design in university; though industry may think differently. 3) From the case of Tsannkuen, the in-house design department highly applies innovative design collaboration, thus dominating the university over the collaboration protocol. Therefore, in the future, the university may need to provide a more creative design collaboration model prior to the cooperation, including well defined aims, contents, outputs, and quantities of the design collaboration. Finally, the proposed model of innovative design collaboration between industry and university is expected to help industry and university to better understand how to adopt a more suitable model for the best performance of design project collaboration. |
